When thinking of hungry children, minds wander to faraway, drought-stricken lands. What many don’t realize is that there are thousands of people in our own communities who don’t know when they will eat their next meal. Our own neighbors put hungry kids to bed. The elderly in our communities have empty cupboards.
The statistics are surprising: More than 245,000 men, women, and children face hunger every day in Nebraska alone, but events like Project Wee Care are there to help. We were proud to be part of this event, which raised 38,000 pounds of food and other necessities for local families.
It was heartwarming to see so much support of the community, and it was a privilege to partner with the Millard Business Community Foundation to bring a little hope to those who need it most. This year, we were able to help more than 320 families with food, clothing, and gifts, and we look forward to being part of next year’s Project Wee Care as well. Learn more about Project Wee Care
The Fight Continues
While every donation helps, the fight against hunger goes on. That is why our Nebraska moving company is committed to providing ongoing to support to Move for Hunger and other groups that seek to help those in our community who need a helping hand.
We regularly take part in events, such as Alexis Brewer’s Holiday Food Drive, and Platinum Fitness Lift the Weight of Hunger, that collect food for the hungry. In the past we held a Fill-A-Truck Food Drive, but it’s regular, ongoing donations that can make the biggest impact. That’s why we support Move for Hunger—and everyone who is planning a move can help!
The idea behind Move for Hunger is to collect the food items that would otherwise be tossed during a move. As you are preparing to pack, simply set aside any unopened, non-perishable food items. We’ll pack them and deliver them to local food pantries where they will be given to the people who need them most. It’s that simple!
It might seem like such a small thing to do, but your donation means one more child won’t go to bed hungry. The following is a list of sample non-perishable items you can donate:
- Pasta
- Sauce
- Baby Food
- Baby Formula
- Cereal
- Oatmeal
- Juice in Cans/Boxes
- Rice
- Peanut Butter
- Jelly
- Crackers
- Cookies
- Vegetables in Cans/Jars
- Fruits in Cans/Jars
- Stews
- Soup
- Beans
- Tuna in Cans/Pouches
- Meat in Cans/Pouches
